In Memoriam: Miguel Ángel Miranda Alonso
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of professor Miguel Ángel Miranda Alonso, a distinguished scientist and pioneer in the field of photobiology in Spain. Miguel Ángel began his academic journey at the University of Valencia and went on to complete his doctoral thesis at the Autonomous University of Madrid under the mentorship of Professor Francisco Fariña.
Throughout his illustrious career, Miguel Ángel made an indelible mark on the scientific community. He authored more than 500 publications and mentored 54 doctoral students, leaving a lasting legacy through both his research and his dedication to education. As one of the founding figures of photobiology in Spain, his contributions helped shape the field and inspire generations of scientists in Spain and abroad. From 2007 to 2013, Miguel Ángel served as President of the European Society for Photobiology (ESP), fostering collaboration and advancing research in photochemistry and photobiology, and co-chaired the 8th Congress of the European Society for Photobiology in 1999 in Granada.
His exceptional work earned him numerous accolades, including the Janssen-Cilag Prize in Organic Chemistry from the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) in 2008, the Theodor Förster Memorial Lectureship Award from the German Chemical Society and the Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry in 2010, the ESP Award for Excellence in Photobiological Research in 2017, and the RSEQ Distinguished Career Award in 2018.
Miguel Angel's curiosity and dedication inspired everyone who had the privilege to know him. Always eager to share knowledge and ideas, Miguel Angel was not only a brilliant scientist but also a generous mentor to many of us. Miguel Ángel will be remembered not only for his scientific brilliance but also for his generosity, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of knowledge. His warmth, wisdom, and passion for discovery will be dearly missed, but his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the field he helped build andwill continue to guide and inspire us.
